If you have been online for a while or spent some time in the forums you have probably heard some of the negativity towards Amazon. You've most likely heard or seen the phrase "you can't make any money with Amazon."
The reason this is going on is because Amazon, unlike most affiliate programs has only a one-day cookie before it resets. This means that if you sent someone to Amazon today, and they don't buy today, you don't get any sales commission, even if they bookmark the page and buy from the same page a week later.
But so what if their cookies expire after one day? There are two ways to look at it. Let's say the person bookmarked the page from your referral link and then forgot about it for a week. A week later he or she does another product search and reads a product review on someone else's blog and clicks on the referral link to Amazon. But this individual decides not to purchase the product they just clicked on. Instead, goes back to the page which he or she bookmarked from your affiliate link a week earlier and buys that product.
In this scenario you lost the commission, and someone else gained it. But from a positive perspective you could have been the one gaining the commission from someone else's referral. Perhaps it evens out, and perhaps it doesn't.
My personal opinion is that Amazon is a great place to start. Their referral rates are low to start, but the more referrals you make, the more you make on each referral. Plus they have a wide range of products and they make it extremely easy for you to get started.
The Amazon affiliate program allows you to open up to 100 Amazon stores at no cost to you. You choose which products you want to promote, and whether you want to link to the store or have the store embedded into your site. You can also choose the colors to match your site.
So before listening to what others have to say, why not give it a try, and who knows, you just might love working with Amazon.
